2022 Self-Expression Award

CJ Calica, Youth Awardee

CJ Calica (she/her) is a 17-year-old photographer from Glendale, California. She has participated in the Las Fotos Project for more than five semesters, specializing in mixed-media works of self-expression. Her work uses a variety of media, including overlay drawings and collages, focusing on portraying a story in her shots using colors. She wants to continue working in mixed media photography and advance her directing and leadership abilities with LFP.

Chrystal Ding

Born in China and based in the UK, Chrystal is a research-led artist-writer who works with photography, writing, personal archives, and machine learning to explore the impact of past (trauma) and future (technological advancement) on identity.

Uzuri Ray

My name is Uzuri Ray. I am a Mexican-American 14-year-old. I was born in Los Angeles and have lived in Boyle Heights all my life. I like photography because I love having the opportunity to capture special moments. I love how pictures can tell stories and I always try to take photos that have some kind of connection to me.

Koral Carballo

Koral Carballo (b. Poza Rica, Veracruz, Mexico in 1987) is a Mexican photographer/artist who tells/researches stories related to identity, violence, migration, and social justice working at the intersection of art and journalism.

2022 Catalyst Award

Wendy Cubillo

Wendy Cubillo (b. East Los Angeles, California in 2004) tells stories related to identity, activism, and pride. Shifting through the different lenses of our people, Wendy uses photojournalism to highlight the day-to-day lives of the Los Angeles community. As a 18-year-old, Wendy has created a Magazine brand named Eonagapi, and released her first magazine titled “Eonagapi: Sonder Issue 01” showcasing pieces by local artists, interviews with rock bands, and various essays by East Los Angeles youth. Her purpose is to spotlight the accomplishments of the Angelino youth, centering around passions, talents, aspirations, and social justice, hoping to provide a microphone in which youth voices can be heard.

Gizelle Hernandez

Gizelle Hernandez is a Mexican American photographer, filmmaker, and visual storyteller. She is a native to Los Angeles, growing up in South El Monte, CA. She attended Art Center College of Design where she graduated with a B.F.A in Photography and Imaging. Her work is signature in its cinematic lighting, set design, vivid color, and creation of worlds in which her subjects truly come to life.
